In Social Studies our class learnt about many people that lived during the Renaissance period each one unique in their own way. The person I learnt about was a great man and artist called Allesandro di Mariano Filipepi; also known as Sandro Botticelli. He drew many great pieces like the Primavera and The Birth of Venus. During his time he painted for the popular, wealthy, Medici family in Florence at that time. Doing a podcast on him was an interesting experience, for I had to put myself in his shoes in order to make the script for this podcast which was quite fun. Sandro wasn’t well known for his art until a group in England called the “Pre-Raphaelites” discovered his aged works and Sandro became a popular figure not in his time but many centuries later. All in all, I hope you enjoy the podcast and enjoy learning about Sandro Botticelli.

Podcast on Sandro Botticelli

Social Studies Reflection-Maya

1. What did I feel successful doing during the process of the project? What am I proud of?

During the process of the project I felt successful in finding the right sources for the information needed and managing to put all of my information into a fun skit. I am proud of how many kids came to my booth during the Medieval Fair, it was exhausting but worth it in the end.

2. What new skills did I value learning?

New skills that I value learning are the new information I collected after completing my project on the 100-year war. Another skill I was proud of was the skit I made without making the information drag too long, even if it was boring at some times but it was quite fun.

3. What was challenging during the process of completing the project? With what did I struggle?

I struggled with the visual, I was not sure if kids would really like to see random people flash by as I talked. In the beginning I wanted to create an animation but that turned out to be a failure so my visual became a slide-show used as I performed my skit.

4. How could I have improved my process so that I would have been more effective?

I could have begun my visual earlier and created it to be more interesting and worth watching. Another thing I could have improved on was to announce a few interesting facts in the beginning of the skit. Rather than drag on.

5. Did I effectively create an age-appropriate presentation and game for the elementary students? (please explain how you know it was appropriate or how you could have changed it to be more appropriate)

I feel that I created quite an interesting piece, but maybe not as intriguing to elementary students. My game seemed to be quite successful though and that was what seemed to attract quite a number of elementary students towards my booth.  It seemed appropriate because after that kids went on telling about my game and presentation that they brought a lot of kids jumping up and down before me. Another thing that I should have added was a more exciting and story like skit.
In the end this project was quite enjoyable even if it was quite long and a bit boring, but in the end the results were quite enjoyable.

What is the issue?

The issue is that over the past 3 days multiple earthquakes have occurred in Indonesia. The Earthquakes all started from the 8.4 magnitude of an earthquake, formed 6 earthquakes leaving 13 dead, many injured, and thousands of homes and buildings destroyed and damaged on the Indonesian island, Sumatra. The horrid disasters, which occurred, formed another disaster, which on the first earthquake on Wednesday formed a 10-foot tsunami crashing into a few fishing villages on the coast of Sumatra. The tremors continue and citizens and residents camp in tents on hilltops or streets. Fear to return home having in mind the 2004 tsunami that killed thousands of people.

Who is affected and how?

  • The citizens and residents of Indonesia
  • The President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia
  • United Nation Relief Teams
  • The families and friends of those who have died

The citizens are affected because they are the ones who live in Indonesia and also have to put up with the threats and natural disasters they have to face and the fear of dying and losing families and friends they love.

The President is involved because he is whom the citizens look up to for safety and relief in natural disasters or threats their country has to face.

The United Nations are involved because they have to save those who are about to be in a natural disaster or threat, the United Nations ally Indonesia so they are affected to have to save them from harm and death.

The families and friends are affected to those who have died are affected because their loved one or friend has died and they will miss them.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

If I was involved I would ask the United Nations to have helped the Indonesian citizens earlier and to raise an alert throughout radios and news channels to warn the citizens on upcoming earthquakes or natural disasters and evacuate the citizens in a faster rate if there was the opportunity.

I learned that there are many horrible activities going on the world which we live on. The other presentations that were shown to us prooved that if we keep going the way we are now the world will turn to trash, no more vegetation, just trash, there will be no way of surviving, we would all perish. But there are ways to prevent these activities. But for Global warming, the topic which we researched due to Solar Activity we only have to wait for it to pass.  I learned alot through the presentations that were shown to our class and I had some favorites among them

I thought that Joshua,Kay Lynn, and Gabriela’s presentation was quite enjoyable and detailed, I learned that HIV and AID’s are both different but HIV is what develops into AID’s. I also learned that many people aroudn the world have died from it through the sharing of needles passing the bacteria of AID’s and breast milk. I found it quite shocking that nobody knew a cure for it, especially the scientists whom have been researching this for years now. Another presentation which I enjoyed was Stephan,Kevin, and Saeri’s presentation they explained their information very well about preventing conflicts around the world, and the music they used expressed their topic very well. I learned from their Presentation that children from the age of 7 and above were used for conflicts around the world; like the blood diamond conflict underage children were given drugs to obey nobody but their “masters” whom were greedy adults who wanted to kill people to gain weapons and dimaonds.  I found that really shocking, especially for the children whom were turned into mindless killing bodies, due to the drugs they were given. I hope that they will be stopped soon, the conflicts, the killing, and countless horrible things. All in all the presentations that were presented were quite good and educational.

2. For the presentation we presented I would add in more information rather than just gather info. I would have enjoyed helping out in making the i Movie.  I would have also added in an explanation of solar activity causing the raising of temperatures around the world; Global Warming. There is hard and real evidence of solar activity actually being the cause of Global Warming, because on Mars temperatures are increasing at the same pace as Earth, and that the pollution and uses of gases has lowered alot in the U.S. how can there still be Global Warming going on if the gases are already lowered? Easy, the result of Solar Activity. This solid proof of Solar Activity, I would have added into the i Movie, but we worried to much on the effects and all that on the imovie we lost the oputunity, I would have highly suggested that we could have had more time, like one or two calsses more to add finishing touches but all in all it was very nice.

Should the five permanent members of the Security Council continue to retain their veto power? Why or why not?

The five permanent members of the Security Council should continue to retain there veto power because they have accomplished yet failed missions others would think impossible or yet even horrifying. The 5 permanent members of the Security Council are well-experienced and have accomplished many deeds in their rank, if they were to stop retaining their power, their ranks may be passed down into the wrong hands, or even worse one who wants to conquer countries for their own desires. Though it would be fair to pass down their rank to an experienced and trustful person I think for now that the Security Council should retain their power until a better person comes along.

What new information has emerged?

The new information that has emerged is that there may be another planet out of our solar system that is very similar to Earth, and that there may be life forms other than us in the whole solar system, which hopefully we can make allies. If we destroy the planet Earth out of all the polution and global warming we may have a chance to move to that planet and start a new life with no polution and wars.

What did you find interesting about this topic?

I found the new planet fascinating because there may be a different life other than ours, which we may be able to have allies in the solar system other than ourselves also over coming the silly idea of “aliens” with green skin and all that. This isfascinating because for a long period of time no one on Earth has ever imagined a planet out of the solar system similar to Earth but there it is! The planet we’ve been waiting to find, just hopefully perphaps if there are life forms on that planet we can share information with each other and become partners forming an unbrakeable alliance.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?

I liked how Mei Huii explained her topic extremely well with her paragraph and her presentation, even though there isn’t much text her current events posting explains alot , that there may be new life other than ours and we can over come the “fear” of alien freaks, which I incredibly doubt is real, and if there is real life out there and they are, indeed , different from us we can over come our differences and becom allies. I enjoyed Mei Huii’s presentation , and she had an inspiring thought with the thought of over coming the thought of “aliens”, great job Mei Huii.

Famous Egyptians Reflection

What would you change to improve your speech/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

I would improve my presention of trying not to be nervous, though I was nervous when I started presenting I felt better as I went on and in the end I wasn’t nervous anymore, I felt more confident. I thought my speech went very well and I don’t think I would change anything much with it except some incidents that happened in my pharaoh’s life. All in all it went excellent.

I found Nick’s presentation superb, it was easy going and his speech explained many things about Osiris’s brother, Set. He was indeed the god of evil and he battled Horus for about 84 years, which I thought was extremely wrong but then again they are gods, I found the next statement extremely hilarious and odd, Horus won the duel and as reward he took……………Set’s testicles. I learned from his presentation that Set’s jealousy towards Osiris led to him killing him into 14 pieces and making Osiris king of the underworld.

Another presentation which I enjoyed was Mei Huii’s she explained abotu her pharaoh’s life with passion and feeling which led to an awesome presentation. I learned that she was the granddaugher of my pharaoh, Hatshepsut and that she advertised her husband, Amenhotep and created a new religiong worhipping one god. Her birth place was unknwon in egyptian text and some think she is from a far foreign country, all in all Mei Huii did a wondeful job in her presentation and her paragraph was superb.

Famous Egyptian Speech

Hatshepsut

Greetings to all! You all should know me obviously but then to those who do not, my name is Hatshepsut meaning Foremost of Noble Ladies, I am the daughter of Thutmose I and Queen Ahmose the first king and queen of the Thutmosid Clan of the 18th dynasty.

I ruled a successful 21 years of the Great Ancient Egypt. I am now known as the most successful of all female pharaohs in great history.

My father ruled 14 great years of the fabulous ancient
Egypt and passed away in 1493 BC, I married Thutmose II and I received the honorable title of Great Royal Wife, my husband ruled for 13 years and then died on his 13th year of his reign with only Thutmose III to be his successor to the throne. I had worried about Thutmose III being too young to take over the throne and therefore I took the throne and became ruler of Egypt until Thutmose III had reached adulthood and had matured enough to be worthy of the throne and the name “pharaoh”. I had admired Sobekneferu and I followed in her footsteps reaching past her goal and crowning myself pharaoh in 1473 BC I remember every single detail! I became the 4th female pharaoh of all Egyptian history and ruled a successful 21 years. The throne name Maatkare meaning Truth in Soul of the Sun, I changed my female name Hatshepsut into Hatshepsu, which I preferred more.

I surrounded myself with strong and loyal advisors which were great friends of mine. Senemut, one of my loyal advisors and I were lovers once long ago……… I created great monuments including the royal tombs at Deir-el-Bahri, the two obelisks at the Temple of Karnak which were the tallest in the world in my time which stood at the entrance of the temple and I build the mortuary temple close to the entrance of the Valley of the Kings, now most of my great monuments are either destroyed, remaining where they once were or in museums in foreign countries far from my dear Egypt.

During my fabulous reign I rebuilt the trade networks after the Hyksos’ discontinued in their time; I was a female pharaoh rare in Egyptian history and a fair ruler.

I led an advanced civilization successfully from 1479 BC to 1458 BC, which were exactly 21 years and 9 months until I passed away and my stepson Thutmose III took over the throne and ruled the great ancient
Egypt.

The Strong Bull, Hatshepsut came to an end on Earth, but not in history where I still remain today….

Title of Article: Virginia Tech President: Gunman Was a Student

Author: Adam Geller

Published Date: April 17, 8:09 PM

What is the issue?

The issue is that in a university in
Virginia a shooting incident occurred, which killed 33 people in the university. The shooting massacre happened in 7:15 AM Monday morning, where the gunman claimed two lives at West Ambler Johnston Hall a dormitory for those who attended the university. Two hours later at Norris Hall an engineering building, 9:15 AM the same gunman claimed 30 more lives and injured at least 15 people in this attack. The gunman was revealed to be a 19 year old Asian student whom attended the same university; he then kills himself with a shot in his head. This is the deadliest shooting incident that has happened in
U.S. history.

Who Is Involved?

  • The students of the university
  • The president and teachers of the university
  • The police
  • The families that lost beloved lives
  • The gunman
  • The injured students and the 33 that died of the incident

  • Virginia’s policy of selling guns

Who is affected and how?

The president and teachers of the university because they failed to raise a proper alarm throughout the school that there was a gunman on the loose, they also failed to call the police and since they didn’t raise any alarm 33 students have now lost there lives and left behind worried parents and sad family members. The police didn’t take notice because they were too slow to react to this incident, the gunman is affected because he was the one who caused innocent lives to be lost for no reason at all. The injured students because they could have faced death but were lucky enough to survive, the families because they have lost some of their most beloved children who died in this incident. And
Virginia’s policy of not selling guns was a failure to how it was a weak influence on the citizens; therefore people could easily buy guns and kill innocent people.

What would I do if I were directly involved?

I would first tighten the security of selling guns in Virginia by putting up gun detectors therefore people wouldn’t be able to ship guns into
Virginia easily. I would influence universities to take caution  and action of gun incidents, therefore no lives will be lost if a gun rampage happens, and I would set up detectors around the school and put up cameras to take caution of gun incidents that might occur. Lastly I would get the police to take caution of warnings from school of gun and bomb threats and immediately help out therefore preventing loss of innocent lives.
